Position Title: Executive DirectorEmployed by: NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota Reports to: The Board of Directors Supervises: NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota and NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota Foundation staff - positions currently include one FT Program Associate and one PT Development Associate The Director is a full-time exempt position. Main office is in Sioux Falls, SD. Statewide travel required. The NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota is a nonprofit organization which works to build and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices including safe, legal abortion. The Executive Director is responsible for planning, organizing and managing the operations of NARAL Pro-Choice SD so that its goals are reached in accordance with the direction and guidance provided by the Board of Directors. Duties and Responsibilities: Budget and Fiscal Management:Carry out the financial management of the organization, including (but not limited to) budgeting, financial reporting and control of expenses. Prepare the annual budget. Responsible for all record keeping and legal document submissions. Report financial health of organization to the Boards.
Public Policy and Legislation: Establish and coordinate organizational priorities regarding the legislative program and pro-active pro-choice public policy. - Lobby at the state capitol and work with legislators on pro-active pro-choice public policy, as well as defend against anti-choice attacks.
Coordinate and supervise research, education, program and public policy projects. Liaison with NARAL Pro-Choice America and other state affiliates.
Fundraising: Direct all fundraising, including (but not limited to) fundraising events, major gift solicitation, grant applications, direct mail and telemarketing, membership acquisition and renewal. - Develop, plan and implement short and long-term fundraising strategies.
Management and Administration:Day-to-day operation of the organization including staff management, record keeping, database management and tracking.Develop (with the board) short and long-term strategic plans for the organization. Recruit, hire, train and supervise staff and interns. Supervise or maintain organizational files, membership records, donor histories, etc. Create strategies for implementation of program goals.
Public Relations and Communications:Coordinate communication with key constituencies and members as the Chief Representative of NARAL Pro-Choice SD - Act as spokesperson and source of information for the media
- Develop and further relationships with community leaders and organizational partners
- Supervise and/or develop public information materials, including website maintenance
Board Governance Work with the Board members of both Affiliate and Foundation boards – especially the Executive Committees – to provide vision and leadership about issues, policy, programming and activities. - Help recruit, train and coordinate boards
- Coordinate board functions and communicate regularly with both boards
- Assist the Board in policy-making
Miscellaneous: § Work a flexible schedule as dictated by the needs of the organization, including nights and weekends. § Ability to travel throughout the state as well as nation wide. § Any other tasks as directed by or approved by the Boards. Qualifications and Skills: Education required: A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in one of the following areas: planning, public administration, business, social science, social work, law, project management, or a related field. Skills required: - Commitment to reproductive freedom and the mission of NARAL Pro-Choice SD
- Professional fundraising experience, including conceiving, developing and coordinating fundraising events, major donor solicitation, grant-writing and other development activities.
- Car, valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and willingness to travel statewide and sometimes nationally
- Flexible schedule, ability to work nights and weekends
- Computer literacy including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook and the Internet
- Detail oriented administrative and time-management skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Prior professional writing experience helpful - grant-writing, policy statements, etc.
- Ability to motivate, organize and work with both staff board members.
- An understanding of and willingness to participate in lobbying efforts
Prior media relations experience including writing press releases, speaking with the press Grassroots organizing experience - Experience developing public policy
- Good short and long-term planning skills. Non-profit grant-funded program management experience

NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota, Inc., is a 501(c)(4) membership organization which focuses on political and public policy work to promote women’s reproductive rights. NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization which supports women’s freedom to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices through research, education, training, and organizing. The NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota PAC engages in the electoral process; supporting pro-choice candidates and opposing anti-choice candidates. The organization has 1 full-time Program Associate and 1 half-time Development Associate and 2 boards made up of 16 members.
The successful candidate must (1) be committed to the mission and goals of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota; (2) have an understanding of and experience in the political, electoral and legislative processes; (3) have successful fundraising experience; (4) have experience managing complex programs and/or organizations, including developing and executing budgets. Outstanding communication skills are also necessary. Previous non-profit experience preferred.
