Crisis Pregnancy Centers

In 2011 the New York Times published an article exposing the inaccurate information that the Alpha Center, a Crisis Pregnancy Center, shares with South Dakota Women.

This New York Times article describes how HB 1217 was signed into law by Governor Dennis Daugaard that requires women, who are seeking abortion care; to first attend a consultation (with a non-licensed counsellor) at a "pregnancy help center." With the goal of educating women on what assistance is available to "help the mother keep her child." The laws swift passage provoked vibrant oppositions from supports of abortion access both locally and nationally, who described the requirements as unconstitutional obstacles for women seeking to have an abortion.

State Representative Peggy Gibson stated that, "South Dakota women should not need to submit to an in-person lecture from an unqualified, non-certified, faith-based counselor or volunteer at an anti-choice crisis pregnancy center."

The Alpha Center has also been described as "non-licensed, non-regulated, unaccredited and openly ideological."
