House Kills Contraceptive Coverage Bill
From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader: Associated Press February 23, 2010 PIERRE – The South Dakota House today killed legislation that would have required insurance companies to cover birth control prescriptions and devices. Opponents had argued that mandating coverage is not the role of government and would lead to higher costs for all. Supporters said it’s unfair that women are denied contraceptive coverage while insurers commonly cover such procedures as vasectomies for men. The bill had been rejected by the Commerce Committee. Supporters asked the House to override the committee today, but representatives on a 29-39 vote refused to hold a debate on the bill.
