South Dakotans Reject Abortion Ban (Again)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 4, 2008 Contact: Casey Murschel, 605-334-5065 South Dakotans Reject Government Interference in Personal, Private Decisions
Sioux Falls, S.D. – Casey Murschel, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota, commended South Dakotans for rejecting Measure 11—the second abortion ban voters have opposed in the last two years. “Tonight’s victory represents a win for our state’s values of freedom and privacy,” Murschel said. “We never wavered in talking to our neighbors at church or at the grocery store about the need to stop this abortion ban, even though we faced a misleading anti-choice marketing scheme. Tonight, the message to South Dakota’s anti-choice groups is clear: Enough is enough—stop trying to make our state the testing ground for efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Murschel is a former Republican legislator who served on the leadership team of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, the umbrella organization first formed to defeat the abortion ban in 2006 that also led the full-fledged effort to defeat Measure 11. In addition to its work with the coalition campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota mobilized a network of nearly 1,000 activists in the state and delivered numerous volunteers to the campaign.
